Understanding Individual J Dictionary (Voc) Pages

Verbs

Easiest case

Let's examine the heading of a verb having both monadic and dyadic use, + . The heading reads

Conjugate + 0 0 0 Plus

The monadic name is conjugate, the dyadic name on the right is plus. Rank of conjugate is the head of 0 0 0, 0. Rank of plus is 0 on left, 0 on right argument.

A little bit tricky

Nub ~. _

A dyadic use for ~. hasn't yet been assigned. ~. is strictly a monad named nub with infinite rank.

Adverbs

We know that adverbs don't have rank. Verbs have rank. Yet, the headings of the adverb pages show rank.

Boolean m b. _ 0 0

m is the name for a noun. m b. is a verb with monadic and dyadic uses. As a monad m b. y has infinite rank and works the same as 0&(m b.) that is, has a left argument of 0. The dyad x (m b.) y has left and right ranks both 0. The parse rules cause tight binding between the adverb and m . The parentheses are unneeded.

Conjunctions

Again, the point: ranks shown apply to the verb formed after fulfilling the left and right conjunction arguments.

mnuv

u and m stand for left arguments to adverbs and conjunctions. m can often be a gerund.

n and v stand for a conjunction's right arguments.

Using m and n constrain the values supplied to be nouns.
